Nintendo 64 demos on the Oculus Rift

To be honest, I haven’t been following much about what’s been going on with the oculus rift besides the fact that it’s bee Kickstarted and some controversy about selling the rights that I already forgot about. I had a quick look at it and it looked just like a more modern version of the Virtual Boy, which is enough to make me turn my head away.

However I must admit that this video caught my eye.

Perfect Dark being played on the Oculus Rift

This is the first video I came across, by Chris Gallizzi, which showcases Perfect Dark being played on the Oculus Rift. It’s nothing out of the ordinary in terms of gameplay, After all, it’s the opening cutscene and that’s about it. The only difference is that it’s being played in stereoscopic 3D, which I believe opened up a whole world of opportunities for the N64 in general. Personally, I find stereoscopic 3D to be quite headache-inducing in many cases that involve quickly focusing from a nearby object (like the player) to a distant one (like a target), a problem I found quite common in Pilotwings Resort.

But despite all this, I would definitely be interested in giving it a go even if it’s just for the novelty factor. Here are some other videos I found that display N64 games on the Oculus rift:

So now that I’ve found out about this interesting development, I will most likely be much more interested in finding out about the Oculus Rift, I’ll maybe even get one if the price is affordable enough. The only problem I can think of for the time being is the headaches and eye strain, but that might just be my biased experiences from the 90’s talking.
