New Pokémon Snap sequel coming out on the Switch

One of those generic questions that makes its way around social media sites regarding retro games is “What classic game deserves a remake?”. It gets asked time and time again and when people ask it regarding the Nintendo 64, the answer s range from Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini… Most of them are either Rare games or games that did get sequels like 1080 Snowboarding or F-Zero X. The one thing that most people can agree if we add some restrictions is that we’d all love to see a new Pokémon Snap game.

Twenty years later, these prayers have been answered in the form of a new game aptly called New Pokémon Snap. They even made an official website for the game that describes it as such:

Get ready for New Pokémon Snap, an all-new adventure for Nintendo Switch that’s inspired by the classic Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.

In New Pokémon Snap, you’ll explore deserts, jungles, and more as you photograph fan-favorite Pokémon and discover never-before-seen Pokémon expressions and behaviors.

From what it looks like, the game is going to have a lot of what made the original great. It’s a shooter on rails, you can throw apples (the trailer didn’t show any Pester Balls) and there is a variety of Pokémon that goes all the way up to Gen VIII.

The game has only been announced and there isn’t much to go off of, but there are a few things that are still up in the air.

The number of Pokémon would be nice to know, the original had 63 out of 151 from Gen I. Players were kind of disappointed that Sword & Shield didn’t have a full National Dex and it’s unlikely that a spin-off game would be any more complete.

The original game on the N64 had only 7 levels, so a lot of the game’s longevity was about replaying levels and finding secrets or trying to get that perfect shot of a Pokémon. It would be great if they took inspiration from all the different generations and use locations from each region rather than generic landscapes.

Are there any new skills or controls? The N64 game had you take pictures, throw apples/pesters, play the flute and speed up. Gyro controls would feel great in a game like this, as well as new ways to interact with the environment.

New Pokémon Snap is being developed by Bandai Namco, which makes sense since Softonic Has been inactive since the GBA days and HAL is pretty much exclusively working on Kirby and Boxboy for the past several years.

These are just a few wishes, but it would be even greater if they surprised us with even more. The game has no release date, so much of it is up to speculation at the moment.
