Super Mario 64 LEGO question block

I was scrolling past my Youtube subscriptions the other day, and came across this little beauty. It’s a LEGO ? block. You know, those iconic blocks from Super Mario games that you hit to get coins and powerups, except that now it’s been turned into a a buildable LEGO question block with some hidden surprises.

The set can be bought here in the USA store for $169.99 or £159.99 in the UK store. There are 2064 pieces in the LEGO question block set, making it fairly advanced to set up. It is about 20-25cm in size (judging by the promotional pictures) and it does have quite a lot of detail so it is recommended for older builders and collectors.

Dioramas and figures

The block opens to reveal little dioramas of four levels from the game (and some highlights):

  • Peach’s Castle outdoors
    • Mario
    • Peach
    • Yoshi
    • Castle
    • Floating Lakitu with camera
  • Bob-omb Battlefield
    • King Bob-omb
    • Goombas
    • Cannons
    • Floating island
    • Chain Chomp
  • Cool, Cool Mountain
    • Penguin
    • Slope
    • Snowmen
    • Waterfall
    • Cabin
  • Lethal Lava Land
    • Star
    • Bully
    • Volcano
    • Lava
    • Eyeball

Personally, I view this more like a collector’s item than anything else. Legos are one of those things that, in my case, would be built once then left in a closet somewhere. When I was a kid, I had a standard set of bricks and that had endless possibilites, but this kind of set is made to be built once and then used as a display piece which isn’t really my style.

The lego question block and everything inside it is still pretty neat though. The low-poly style of the Legos translates well from the low-poly style of the N64 game. It’s just not something that’s very practical for its cost or size, in my opinion.
