McRoll’d 64

This is a bit of an oddity, yet it’s something that I’ve been looking forward to for the best part of 12+ years. Mcroll’d 64 is a spin on one of my favourite internet memes with a twist of N64 thrown in for good measure.

Mcroll’d: The meme, the myth, the legend.

A bit of history first.

We’re all familiar with the Rickroll, I presume? It’s a classic meme that has stood the test of time. The basic gist of it is this: You send the Rick Atley music video for Never Gonna Give You Up to someone with a nice clickbaity title, or you send it as a response to someones question. Something like this:

Hey, I found that video you were looking for!

… You get the idea.

Now, this wasn’t the only iteration of the bait-and-switch meme. You had the Duckroll which came before it, the Bel-air’d, Assad’d… It’s a very popular format. Nowadays most messaging services have a preview that pops up under links so it’s not as common as it used to be, but it’s still a fun and harmless little prank.

McRoll’d is one of these spin-offs. These are a series of videos that remix songs (mostly from Touhou and anime openings) by using pitch-modified samples from Japanese McDonalds ads from the 2000’s. It’s kind of hard to explain, but I think it’s best shown.

Here is the original one:

The main draw behind the meme (for me at least) is not so much to trick someone into clicking on it, but rather to just see how creative the remix can be and which instruments get replaced with which samples in each section of the song.

It also doubles up as satire of how corporations try to adapt their brand to every passing trend in order to jump on jump on the bandwagon, no matter how irrelevant their business is to it.

So what is McRoll’d 64?

Every few years, I browse Nikoniko Douga and just search for ドナルド (Donarudo, Ronald McDonald in Japanese) to see what’s new, and to further prove to myself that it’s not a dead meme. I come across a few good ones every once in a while. Last time I found this one with the Mortal Kombat theme or this Sailor Moon one.

Eventually, I got to this video by わっつー (Wattsuu) which remixes Bob-Omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64. It starts off with a short bit about Ronald asking who Fernandez-kun is, and if the Mac Home Run Award was already decided. It then cuts to the music video proper.

It’s just about a minute long, but there’s so much sensory overload, it feels like an eternity. There’s clips from all over the place: The original McDonalds ads, USA Mcdonalds ads and even newer Japanese ones. You really have to see it to believe it, I’ll just leave it at that.
