Happy Birthday Steve
One of the simpler demos out there, Happy Birthday Steve is very straight forward. I’m not too sure who Steve is, but the ROM was made by Nep (PD), which I presume stands for Protest Design, a popular team of Demo makers. It dates back to August 1998, making it one of the earlier Nintendo 64 demos to be released and explaining its simple appearance.
The first phase of the demo starts with a red square white cross flying in (maybe Steve is Danish?) followed by text saying “Happy Birthday Steve”. The red square keeps on resizing for a few seconds until it disappears and the text flies downwards. After a bit of a wait the same square and cross is now rotating in three dimensions and moving towards the left. Throughout the demo, there is a very short audio loop that gets grating very quickly.
The included files are mostly a bunch of jibberish. thetrip.tag and vsf.nfo seem to be just a couple of ads that don’t really lead to anything interesting. File_id.diz does have a simple title card that explains the ROM a little bit, and I do mean just that. It just says that it’s a birthday gift to Steve and that it’s from Nep-CML, and that it’s crap. That’s all there is to that.
