Wet Dreams

Wet Dreams is a series of four homebrew demos by ImmO released on 25 April 1999. It’s mostly a bunch of bitmap scrollers with a few 3D effects here and there. It was released for the Presence of Mind ’99 competition, where it won 1st place. Well done!

About Wet Dreams

This submission to POM ’99 contains four separate ROMs, so let’s have a look at each of them separately.

Part 1

This is a simple scroller that starts out with a static image that says “Wet Dreams POM”, then changes to an “Immo” test in a fancy font, and then a 3D wavy bitmap with the name of the competition on it. Then it finishes off with an endcard.

The first part of Wet Dreams

Yesssss! This is the entry for POM99. You are watching the readme file, so sit back and read. Some info on it:

Part 2

The second part of Wet Dreams is pretty much just an ad for Madeira Games, an online game store which (despite its name) is based in the UK. It seems to have shut down some time in early 2004.

What’s interesting about this demo is that it says that there’s a secret within it that would let you get a V64 for free or £235 (it’s not very clear). The website was offering them for £220 at the time, so it’s not a particularly good deal.

Do not start searching the binary, As you will not find them!

Part 3

The third part of this series of demos is really just a sequence of random images. Most of them are just static bitmaps, but there are a few 3D objects sprinkled throughout. I’ll just post them here for you to have a look.

Part 4

The final part in the series is a lot simpler, and the only one that has some sort of interactivity within it. It’s basically just a radioactive can that has a sphere orbiting it, and the sphere deforms the can as it moves around. That’s all there is to it.

Review and conclusion

The variety in Wet Dreams really is astounding. I made 36 screenshots for the four demos, and still left some stuff out for the sake of brevity. It is a true work of intensity and variety, there is a bit of everything for everyone.

That said, it isn’t a particularly complex demo, even for the time. Most of it is just bitmaps, and the 3D effects are pretty basic.

Something that does make it unique is that demos #1, #2 and #3 all have a definite end. They don’t loop forever in perpetuity which is quite weird for these kinds of demos.

Wet Dreams doesn’t really live up to its name very well, but it is surely a trip to remember.
