POMolizer

POMolizer is a homebrew demo for the Nintendo 64 by team Protest Design, released on 25 April 1999. It’s basically a demo that has a variety of 2D effects and text with a bangin’ music track. It was released to compete in the Presence of Mind ’99 competition, where it won fifth place.

You can get the ROM and its accompanying files from its download page by using the password pomolizeme.

About POMolizer

POMolizer is a fairly simple demo. It has about half a dozen fast-paced 2D effects with some text overlaid on top of it. I’ll dump the text here to keep it all in one place, but in reality it is spread out throughout the duration of the demo.

Protest Design presents POMolizer. We did it!

This is our first demo for the N64! Code by Renderman, Ultra thanks go to Immo for major help and to LaC for his modplayer. Graphics by Renderman, Koreaner, Accent. Music by Bee Hunter. We put this small peace together in a big hurry to be a part of the POM.

Read the profile, some regards and the protest members list. See you on our channel or on . Visit our site at protest-design.de to get some stuff from us.

Thanks for viewing, c u in our next demo. Protest designerz on da run.

The end.

Renderman

The first section contains two sets of concentric circles, each forming a ‘ripple’ effect. They move around the screen in a sinusoidal manner. The second screen has two series of lines formed by circles making what almost looks like a par of segmented caterpillars.

Up next is another bunch of circles paid on top of each other, each smaller than the one below it, forming a kind of ‘lens flare’ effect. Then we have a series of red horizontal bars moving vertically up and down in yet another sinusoidal motion.

The following two visualisations are very similar as they both take place on a circle that is coloured with a blue-green gradient. The first one has a bunch of dots drawing what appears to be a large “8”, and the second one has a bunch of horizontal and vertical blue bars that move from one edge of the screen to another.

The demo ends with a much simpler flowing hue gradient with not much in front of it and finally a “The end” screen which has some vertical blue bars and growing/shrinking light blue box behind it.

The music does kick some ass, but I haven’t managed to find its name, only that it was made by Bee Hunter.

Review and Conclusion

Pomolizer does have some interesting effects and cool music. I particularly like the ‘snake’ one above the rest. The screenshots I took don’t really give it justice, you need to have a look at the video to get the true feeling that the demo gives.

That said, it is very basic. The in-game text doesn’t reveal much about it, and neither does the accompanying readme files so there’s not much to say about it besides the graphical effects.

This one isn’t really necessary to run on the N64. You can tell all the effects right there in the video so there’s no real reason to see it on the real console, except for console purists I guess.
