About Megahawks Music Disk 1

This demo has a somewhat interesting history. It dates back all the way to 1989 When Megahawks made a demo for the Commodore Amiga that included a bunch of music and 2D graphics. Over time the original demo was lost, but Dr Vector (one of the composers) had a backup of the music and graphics.

They managed to rebuild the demo for the PC (.exe) in June 2002, and then a port of it on PS2 in November 2003. It would take until August 2008 for it to finally reach the Nintendo 64 as their final demo in the console.

This demo is called Megahawks Music Disk 1, but I couldn’t find any evidence of there being a second one. my guess is that they made several of these back in the Amiga days, but this is the only one to be recreated on other platforms.

The demo itself is fairly self explanatory. It’s a collection of audio tracks in MOD format that are played on your Nintendo 64. Here’s a list of tracks and their authors:

  1. Beachparty 89 – dr.vector
  2. Things are o.k. – copycrazy
  3. Muscleman – copyman
  4. Robotic muscle – dr.vector
  5. Lambada robat – mc coolbeat
  6. Dragon’s flight – copyman
  7. Top gigolos – dr.vector
  8. On the disco with no girl – mc coolbeat
  9. Horse of steel – pizza
  10. Women of my dream – dr.vector

Marquee text

This has to be the longest marquee I’ve ever seen. It’s so long that the demo actually crashes before the marquee has a chance to loop over. And yes, I tried it twice and it crashes at the same point. It lasts for a total of 47 minutes at about 100 characters per minute which means it’s reaaally slow.

I could not believe my ears!!! At this point he did some sort of ni

Conclusion and review

Given that Megahawks Music Disk 1 is really an Amiga demo put on the Nintendo 64, it’s not particularly impressive especially considering some of Musculman’s previous work.

It is somewhat reminiscent of other demos like 2 Blokes & An Armchair in the sense that it’s a port of an earlier Amiga demo. The music is fairly decent for homemade chiptune, it’ll make you feel right at home in 1989.
