Mario Adventure 2
Mario Adventure 2 is a homebrew hack of Super Mario 64 by Aglab2 and released on 17 Oct 2025. It’s a SM64 adaptation of all the levels in Sonic Adventure 2, where you play through both hero and dark storylines as the titular plumber.
You can get the patch from its download page here by using the password chaoscontrol, and apply it to a SM64 ROM called Super Mario 64 (U) [!].z64. I also included its prequel, Mario Adventure, but I couldn’t get it to work on my console or emulators. You can also get the MA2 patch from its mario64hacks page.
About Mario Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure 2 is often considered among the best, if not the best, 3D sonic game. The game is split into two paths: Hero (where you play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) and Dark (Shadow, Eggman and Rouge). Each path follows one side of a two-sided plotline, both converging into a common final storyline.

The game starts out looking like a normal Super Mario 64 game, until you get to Bob-Omb Battlefield. The graphics start to fall apart, taking you to a hollow room with a few platforms. Jumping to the other end leads you to two pipes for each storyline.
There are the classic Sonic speed stages that we all know and love, but there’s also mech stages where you blow through all kinds of enemies and treasure hunting stages where you have to find three emerald pieces. These are all included in this ROM hack. On speed and mech stages, your objective is to reach the end of the stage, but in treasure hunting stages you just need to find a few stars.
Each stage contains a series of collectable stars which are more reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey than Sonic Adventure 2, but they’re optional, only useful for getting the True ending and unlocking a secret “New game +” style mode.
The racing stages are not included, and there is only a Bowser boss at the end of Hero, Dark and Final storylines.

Review and conclusion
This is one of the most impressive hacks of Super Mario 64, for various reasons.
First, it has a whopping 1,000 stars for you to find, more than any other hack. It also makes it easy to keep track of which stars you collected by providing a list, and a radar to tell you when you’re close to one. You also don’t have to restart the stage each time you find one, which is nice.
Second, the mechanics from SA2 are translated perfectly into Mario Adventure 2. All the hooks, vines, loops, springs and gates are there and function (mostly) as the would in the original game. There are a few things missing like dash attacks, wind ups and so on. If I had to complain about anything, the speed booster belts last only a second and they’re very awkward so it’s best to avoid them.

Finally it’s the stage design. The stage models are immaculate and identical to their original counterparts. It really feels as though you’re playing through the same game, but with a structure adapted to the SM64 engine.
I’d definitely recommend anyone who played Sonic Adventure 2 to play this ROM hack. And if you haven’t played it, now’s the time to do it.
