Majora’s Mask release rumoured on 3DS

A poster that goes by the name of Team Fail over at gbatemp.net wrote a post on Thursday saying that they encountered evidence for a version of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS over at a Target store in Canada.

Majora’s Mask on 3DS

There have been rumours of Majora’s Mask appearing on the 3DS since Ocarina of Time came out in 2011. Since then, we’ve been eagerly awaiting any news of a release of it on a newer platform, especially now that both Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time have had graphical upgrades rather than just retreads on the virtual console.

This image, along with the one in the header of the post is the evidence of Majora’s Mask being released on 3DS. Let’s go through one image at a time to see what they show.

First off, the header image shows the shelf label that brought this into question. It reads

“3DS ZELDA MSK
3DS THE LEGND OF ZELDA M.M
44.99”

This clearly shows that the game displayed is Majora’s Mask for the 3DS. This isn’t really much proof since anyone could take a label scan and the edit it to say ‘Majora’s Mask’ on it.

However, the more interesting bit comes with the second image. It’s what appears when you look up the stock of the 3DS Majora’s Mask in the store’s inventory system. The description says that there pretty much isn’t any stock, but there is a shelf location reserved for it. Most interestingly, it says that the release date for it is New Year’s Eve, 2014. I would have assumed that given the nature of the game, it would have been more likely to be 00:00 on Dec 29, but I suppose that it’s just meant to be a placeholder for a future release date.

Conclusion

It’s quite likely that this Majora’s Mask ‘leaked’ data is meant to be a glitch in the system or a prank but given the evidence, it’s surely a hint in the right direction. Even if it’s true, we won’t be seeing it advertised until the next Nintendo Direct or E3, and it’s unlikely that it will be released in 2014 given the lack of PR related to it.
