Junichi Masuda hints at a new Pokémon Snap

Do you remember playing Pokémon Snap 15 years ago? I sure do. As far as I remember, it was the first FPPS (First Person Photo Shooter), where the objective is to take pictures of Pokémon in their natural environment rather than violently gun them down like a PETA ad. Well, a recent interview with Pokémon director Junichi Masuda shows that he still remembers the game and would like to see a new one come out in the future.

Junichi Masuda on a possible new Pokémon Snap

“It’s always great to hear from the fans and as a game player myself I can relate to what they want, They’re always wanting cool new things and obviously it would be great if we had the resources to develop all of these things but that can be difficult.

“For Pokemon Snap specifically, that wasn’t originally developed by Game Freak so…

“As a player I definitely want to play a cool new version of Pokemon Snap but at the same time I also think if it was just a remake with better graphics I don’t think it would be as interesting as a lot of people are imagining.

“I think whoever… If someone was to end up developing it they’d have to come up with some cool ideas to really make it a good game for the current generation. It’s sort of like what I was saying about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. If it was just a direct port that would be kind of neat as well, but having new elements is definitely important.”

There you have it, right from the man himself. If there’s to be a new Pokémon Snap, it’s going to have to be substantially innovative. They can’t just remake the Nintendo 64 original, it’s going to have to be something big.

My first ideas for this sequel would be that it should include all Pokémon. that’s right, all 700+ of them. Maybe even including variants and shinies too. Next, it should be integrated with Miiverse so that you can post and share your favourite pictures. That should be good enough for a start, let’s see what everyone else comes up with.
