Destroy!

Destroy! is a homebrew minigame for the Nintendo 64 by Team Ultra Rare released on 13 December 2024. It’s a rampage-like game where you play as giant kaiju monsters destroying a city.

You can get the ROM from its download page by using the password minigamemadness and the source can be found here. Note that this is the same ROM that includes all the other minigames released for the competition.

About Destroy!

A game of Destroy! starts with each player at a corner of the screen within a city grid of buildings that can be seen from a still real-3D isometric perspective. There are twenty buildings set in a 5×4 pattern, and every player controls a giant godzilla-like kaiju monster that can swing their tail at them in order to bring them to the ground.

There are four armoured tanks rolling around the arena, but they cannot be destroyed and only really pose a hindrance if you manage to get yourself shot by them. They’re basically a noob’s distraction.

Players get points by attacking and destroying buildings. The last player to attack a building before it falls gets all the credit for destroying it. Each building type also grants a varying amount of points based on how big it is:

  • Small: 1 hit, 1 point
  • Medium: 3 hits, 2 points
  • Large: 5 hits, 3 points

You can swing your tail to attack and stun the other players. This might be more useful at higher levels of play, but generally you’ll want to stick to hammering those buildings away.

Review and Conclusion

The gameplay and style of Destroy! is very reminiscent of the Rampage arcade game (or Rampage: World Tour / Universal Tour, if we want to keep things on the N64). In both games you play as a giant monster who has to destroy high-rise buildings as fast as possible. The main difference is that Rampage is a 2D platformer but this is more like a top-down 3D beat-em-up.

When it comes to playing the game, the objective is simple and clear: break as much as you can. The only thing that isn’t very clear at first is that the tanks don’t give any score for hitting them, and only provide a mild inconvenience. It would be pretty cool if they could aim and shoot once they have a direct line of sight to make them more of a nuisance.

Rounds are pretty short so it’s a good game for when you want to run many matches one after the other but otherwise it feels like a quick blip in a longer marathon.

The AI seems to be just about as competent in all the difficulty levels. If you want a real challenge, try to stick to playing against human players.

That said, the dark and gritty atmosphere does somewhat increase the tension in the match. It makes it feel as though the stakes are high and there is no other choice than to fulfill your destiny and bring everything crumbling down to the ground.

Destroy! is one of those games that really does get your blood pumping for some wanton destruction. It lets you mash your controller to win the game, and that’s always a lot of fun.
