About the PC Engine Emulator
This emulator is brought to us by the same team that brought us the Game Boy Emulator, this time providing us with a home console.
The PC Engine (aka TurboGrafx-16) was a console released in 1987 by NEC and Hudson Soft. Known for its 8-bit performance and 16-bit-like graphics, it excelled in 2D games, particularly shooters. It was the first 16-bit console to be released and despite popularity in Japan, it didn’t perform in western markets due to the strong competition from the NES, SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive.
The demo itself contains two parts. The first is an intro that has a rotating 3D model of a PC Engine console along with a scroller with some text.

Once you press the start button, it moves over to the actual game itself. This emulator comtains only one game – Galaga ’99, which is a renamed version of Galaga ’90 for the PC Engine, which is itself a port of Galaga ’88 for the arcade.
It’s a fairly faithful port. The controls are tight and resposnsive and I havan’t encountered any bugs when playing it. The only thing that’s missing is the audio – it’s a custom track written by Dr. Hibbert.
Review and conclusion
The PC Engine emulator by Blackbag does follow up on the footsteps of its predecessor. It is emulating a more powerful machine than the Game Boy almost flawlessly, and for that it does deserve some recognition.
The only drawbacks is that there is no sound and you only have the choice of one game. This time they didn’t bother to make a legal/illegal version of it though and just included a plain ROM to play, not that I’m complaining.
