Commentary on Edge magazine’s N64 retrospective

An N64 Retrospective

So I was having a look at articles on the internet on the N64 and I came across a pretty good retrospective on the Nintendo 64’s History by Edge Magazine.

The article is actually pretty good in describing the problems that plagued the Nintendo 64 during its development. I particularly like the way that it described the arrogance that Nintendo had at the time. This was because of the great success of the NES, SNES and Game Boy and how this lead to myriad issues during development. The examples of such issues were the delay of the Nintendo 64’s release, the broken partnership with Sony that brought on a powerful competitor, the lack of decent games until much after its launch. All the article had left to say was the way that it alienated third parties with its continued use of cartridges and royalty schemes.

Conclusion

Overall, I believe that this N64 Retrospective is good, but it focuses a bit too much on the problems that Nintendo had when developing the Nintendo 64 and barely had anything to say about what it did right. The article also stops talking about the history of the Nintendo 64 at its launch and doesn’t say much about anything that happened afterwards.

Either way, there you have it, my two cents on Edge magazine’s N64 retrospective.

Simon Parkin at Edge magazine wrote a N64 retrospective for it's birthday, and here I am to have a look and comment on it.
