Super Mario Run 64

Super Mario Run 64 is a game that was released a few weeks ago made by Kaze Emanuar. It’s a homebrew game that is based off of the concept of the upcoming Super Mario Run game for mobile devices due for later this year. The concept and controls of the game are simple: Mario runs on his own, and all you have to do is press the A button to jump at the right time to progress through the level.

Download the Super Mario Run 64 ROM using the password “SMR64”. Getting the ROM running is a bit difficult, I couldn’t get it to run on the Nintendo 64 console, but it worked fine on a Project 64 emulator with the settings set to have 8MB Memory (Settings > CONFIG: SUPER MARIO 64 RUN > Memory Size).

The hard part about this game is that though there is no turning allowed and you can’t fall along the depth of the stage, the timing for each wall jump is very precise. If you don’t get the jumps just right, you’ll fall to your doom and have to start all over again. Not only that, but there are a few other places that are very complicated like in the video blow when jumping from the mushroom to the grey blocks at 0:23; I don’t remember how many times I knocked my head on the top barrier thingy.

The concept is there, and I like the challenge of getting those wall jumps just right, even if they aren’t essential to beating the level. Personally, I’d like to see this get a few more levels, all this work in making the models and coding the movement can be used a bit further to get a bit more juice and make a more complete game.
