Starcraft 64: Reign of the Void

Starcraft 64: Reign of the Void is a homebrew hack by Poto-Sacré that was released on 13 Sept 2026. It’s a full conversion of Starcraft 64, with all-new campaigns and custom maps.

You can get the ROM from its download page by using the password mylifeforaiur, and see the source code and mirror on Github.

About Reign of the Void

It’s a bit hard to describe exactly what this game is in one sentence, but ti’s basically a mission pack for Starcraft 64. We’ll need to go through each one of the missions to get an idea of what it’s about.

Tower defense

Campaign 1 (Vanilla Terran) has been replaced with a tower defense game. Kills get you vespene gas, every 5 gas gives you a civilian that you can trade for units or minerals (for towers). Waves of flying enemies try to traverse the map and you need to stop them before they can reach your cerebrates.

It requires a lot of micro-management for a TD game, so it’s a matter of balancing efficiency with your APM. Units like hydralisks can move to deal more damage to the enemy, but they’ll distract you from your macro-management.

Resident Evil

Campaign 2 (Vanilla Zerg) has been replaced with a Resident Evil port. You play as a STAR agent sent in to confront zombies that have infested a facility; managing you resources effectively is the key to winning.

Again, it requires you to be able to quickly react to incoming zombies (Kerrigans) which is quite difficult with the N64 joystick.

Aeon of Strife

Campaign 3 (Vanilla Protoss) This is the MOBA game based off of the Starcraft engine. You need to assist infinite armies across to defeat the opponent’s base, but you only really control one hero unit and minion’s upgrade levels.

Campaign

Campaigns 4-6 (Brood War) have been replaced with custom campaign which are the first three episodes of StarCraft: Reign of the Void by FelixEylie. It’s basically a reimagining of the Warcraft 3 story in the Starcraft universe.

Review and conclusion

It’s great to see that there is finally a Starcraft 64 hack for the Nintendo 64. If you wanted to play a proper base-building RTS, there was only this and Command and Conquer on the Nintendo 64. And for good reason, this is a genre that is best played with a mouse and keyboard.

That said, I never got the chance to play SC64 back in the day because it was exclusive to North America and Australia. I did manage to get an NTSC copy years later, but it was really no more than a novelty because by that point I no longer had a Mac and could play Starcraft on the PC without issue. Heck, even Starcraft 2 was almost out by that point.

If you have access to the game on PC, there is no reason to play it on the N64. It’s really clunky and slow, and just makes you wish you could aim your pointer more accurately. The original SC & Brood War campaign can be played on the console since they’re slow-paced enough, but these mods are meant to be challenges for pro players who have played through the original campaign hundreds of times. It’s quite impossible to have the speed and precision to play the Resident Evil game for instance.

It is certainly technically new, and another game that can be confidently said to have a Nintendo 64 hack, and for that it still gets my seal of approval.
