About Uncharted Terra 2264
This is a very narrative-led game, so let’s go through the story and gameplay separately.
Story (no spoilers)
The story is told via some FMV cutscenes, text scrolls, in-game character logs and the environment in which you play.
A long-abandoned colony was once inhabited by humans and the enigmatic alien species known as the Irenix. The settlement was built around rare crystals and a mysterious energy project that ended generations ago, leaving behind only rumors of limitless power and unanswered questions. No one knows what truly happened to the colonists, and past expeditions into the site never returned.
Your ship is broken down and you can’t escape without salvaged parts, you must go deeper into the decaying colony, piecing together fragments of its history through scattered records, malfunctioning systems, and what traces of life were left behind. Piece by piece, the colony reveals how shared ambition and poor understanding between species led to consequences no one fully anticipated.

Gameplay
Uncharted Terra 2264 is a first-person exploration game. You’re put into an alien planet and have to find your way around solving puzzles. There are two types of puzzles: Object puzzles and keypad puzzles.
Object puzzles involve finding objects on the ground and then using them and/or combining them to access a new area. The items you find are usually very bright so they contrast well against the floor, they’re very hard to miss. You usually don’t hold more than two or three at a time, so the permutations for combining them are very small.
The keypad puzzles are a bit trickier. In the second stage there are three rooms which require a 4-digit code to get into. The code for getting into these is hidden within the logs/diaries also found on the floor, so reading through them is not optional. It’s often the case that you have to combine information from more than one log to get the passcode, so make sure to keep that in mind.

Levels
There are three distinct levels in Uncharted Terra 2264. You can backtrack to a previous level if you want, but all the objects to finish a level can be found without going backwards.
The first level starts in at the crash site and goes up until the facility entrance. This is the most ‘outdoorsy’ level, taking place in a canyon-like area. There aren’t any keypads here, but all the object puzzles take place near the facility entrance.
The second level is the upper level of the mining facility. This is by far the longest level, with each log clue or item making you backtrack to the opposite end of the building. The mood is dark and ominous, making it quite hard to find your way around. There is a small outdoor section on a bridge which does give you a bit space to breathe.
The final level is the mining facility core. It is the most advanced and fantastical area, but it only really has one puzzle in it so it’s very brief.

Review and conclusion
When I first started playing this game looking through the spaceship, I was expecting something like the Megatextures demo from a few years back: something confined and claustrophobic. Kind of like being stuck in your spaceship and doing repairs trying to keep it running. Boy was I wrong.
The story is closely woven into the gameplay. You need to read the logs in order to make sense of where you are and what needs doing, and of course to understand the events from 70 years ago.

The gameplay is pretty simple if you can do some trial and error. My first playthrough took 30 minutes and the 2nd (knowing how to solve the puzzles) took less than 20. The second level can be a bit tedious since a clue/item that you find is needed at the far end of the station, and then the far end gives you an item that takes you back to where you started, slowly unlocking paths. Not to mention that it feels like you’re wading
You never hold more than three items so the item puzzles are easy, it’s just a matter of knowing where to put them. The log/keypad puzzles are harder (especially the 3rd one) since you have to piece together clues from different logs and read between the lines in order to solve them.
The atmosphere is ominous and empty. It truly feels like an abandoned mine that is barely functioning. It is quite barren though. Some of the indoor areas could have used some landmarks or doodads to help find your way, or even give some ‘environmental storytelling’ to your walking back and forth.

Technically, it’s a marvel. All the music, models, text (in 8 languages), textures and even four FMV sequences fit into a tiny 8MB ROM. That’s tiny for something with this much stuff in it. It even comes with a save feature. Though it always runs in a letterboxed aspect ratio, leaving about 25% of the screen unused.
Uncharted Terra 2264 is a creepy atmospheric game that is more about taking the environment in and discovering the ever-intensifying lore than about jumpscares or fast reflexes. Give it a go, and be sure to read every log, because the colony hides more in its words than its walls.
