This is a game that is very bare-bones and incomplete, but still has a little bit of depth to it. There is little context to the setting or objectives, so you have to piece together how things

It’s a first-person arena shooter where enemies walk at you and you have to shoot them down. They only take one shot to die, so it’s just a matter of aiming your sights just right.

There are three weapons available:

• Wrench: A melee weapon
• Flamethrower: A fast-firing weapon
• Gun: single shot weapon

The map is a cyclical arena, similar to multiplayer battlegrounds from the N64 era, but with very limited textures. It’s all very trippy, it feels a bit like playing Turok in Gouraud mode. It’s a bit disorienting, but there’s always a clear path for where you’re supposed to move so it’s not too bad to navigate.

The enemies are melee attackers. They walk towards you until they get close enough, then they start slapping you. You move faster than they do, so you can always outrun and strafe them. They are supposed to have a walking animation, but the armature seems messed up so they’re a bit of a jumble of glitched body parts.

Review and conclusion

At a glance, Repairman vs Creatures seems like it’s just an unfinished game. And it is. The textures aren’t all there, enemies are glitchy and there’s no real objective or challenge. Heck, even if you lose all your health, you just end up with negative HP and no game over screen.

That said, even though this isn’t the first first-person game we’ve seen in N64 homebrew land, it does have the unique distinction of being the only one I can think of to have some kind of verticality. The others operate exclusively on a flat surface, but this one really takes it to another level, literally.

There isn’t really that much to say about this game. It’s incomplete, but it is fairly ambitious for a first project on the N64. With a bit of polish on the enemy animations and a proper gameplay loop with some challenge, it could be a decent enough game. As it is right now, it’s more of a curiosity.
