2048 64

2048 64 is a homebrew game by Vrgl117 Games released on 18 December 2019. It’s a port of the classic Gabriele Cirulli game 2048 from 2014 where you have to slide blocks against each other until you get to 2084.

About 2048 64

The original 2048 is one of those games that has been ported to countless platforms, kind of like Tetris. It’s a puzzle game that’s simple to understand, but can still get to be quite challenging if you get far enough.

You can move the blocks in any of the four directions and they will shift along as long as there is space to do so. When two blocks of the same value fall on each other, they merge and their values are combined. You continue doing this until you get a block with “2048” in it, as the title implies.

Every move, a block with “2” on it appears in a random empty cell, but if it can’t, the game will be over. This means that to achieve the famed 2048 square, you need to perform at least 1024 moves.

This N64 port achieves just that – it lets you play the popular game right on your Nintendo 64 console. It’s really as simple as that.

Review and conclusion

This port of the now classic 2048 game does what it sets out to do. nothing more nothing less.

There were two glitches I found, first is that the audio cuts off about 4 minutes in, never to return. The other is that there was this one square in a match that didn’t have a number displayed on it and refused to merge which hampered my ability to play the game. It would have also been nice to be able to play with the C-buttons or joystick.

At this point I would enjoy it if N64 ports of classic games would have something 3D-ish about them to make it more N64-adjacent, but for a game made in 2019 it’s perfectly acceptable. Give 2048 64 a go, and see if you can make it all the way to the eleventh power of two.
