About BotBoy!64
BotBoy!64 is a 3D platformer with linear stages. You have a start and a target top reach with collectable bolts strewn along the way. It is in a similar vein to Rayman 2: The Great Escape.
What makes this game unique though, is its upgrade system. The game is split into six levels, with sets of two being set to use a specific level of repair:
- Level 1-2: Body & head
- Level 3-4: Added arms
- Level 5-6: Complete with legs.
Now that might sound mundane at first, but each set of body parts comes with its own moveset. The base body can hop around in an arc up to a large triple-jump, adding the arms gives a standard jump and an arm spin attack, and finally the legs give a crouch, long-range kick, high jump and long jump. Each body type is made specifically to complete the challenges in its levels, so use them all wisely.

There are a few enemies throughout the game like purple rats, sheres with googly eyes, blade traps, sniper rifles and soldiers. There are also environmental hazards like acid pools, bottomless pits, crushers and lasers.
Each level gets longer and harder than the last, but at least from level 3 onwards you are rewarded with some checkpoints. As you gain more body parts, you also get a brief cutscene progressing the story too.
If you complete the game with all the collectables collected, you get a special ending.

Review and conclusion
This game feels like someone built a playground the size of a small continent and then sprinkled it with personality. The levels sprawl, the world hums, and the main robot is animated with the kind of charm that makes you audibly “aww”.
BotBoy!64 walks a careful line when it comes to challenge. Demanding, yet never oppressive. It is kind of frustrating to die, but you’re just sent back to the last checkpoint and once you complete a section it’s almost trivial to complete it again.

There are a couple of annoyances. Like with many early 3D games, the camera is a hindrance. The stages are linear so it’s hard to line yourself correctly in the Z-axis when making a jump. You kind of have to stop and think deeply before each hop in order to make your mark. It also means that pits appear out of nowhere and walking towards the camera is a step into the unknown.
I didn’t manage to get the true ending when you collect all the bolts, but I’ll leave that to some other intrepid explorers.
Definitely give BotBoy!64 a go. You won’t be disappointed.
