About Tetris Demo Beta

The game is fairly bare-bones, but there is still a few things of interest to note about it, mostly what is missing for it to be a good Tetris game.

  • First, the heading in the game contains an email, for a domain that doesn’t point to a working server anymore.
  • The game was released before completion because it had to be delivered in time for Presence of Mind.
  • The Tetris game itself has a few odd things about it.
    • There are two brick sprites that float around the screen. One that moves from left to right constantly, and the other that moves with the joystick.
    • Only I, O and T – style tetraminos exist in this game. Oddly enough, those are the ones that are (linearly) symmetrical.
    • The rows don’t disappear when you complete them. This makes it so that the objective of the game is to drop the blocks as slowly as possible to survive.
    • Pressing down drops the blocks, while pressing up brings them to the top. This allows the blocks to get stuck above the left and right barriers.
    • There is no game over screen, the game just stops.
    • Rotation is done with the joystick, not any of the buttons, making it very difficult to get the T-blocks to orient themselves as you want them to.

Though the game has many flaws, it’s still interesting to see how someone can make a Tetris clone for the Nintendo 64 work to the point where the basics are set in place. Have a look at it if you have the chance to.
